The Room: apparently the worst film ever made! (2003)

one of the guys i work with in adland showed me a really weird 7 second clip on youtube about a month ago. it features a long-haired, heavily scarred actor, (methinks he could be an ex-pornstar…) declaring his lover laura was “tearing him apart”. the thing is, his line was delivered with equal part drama to equal part zero acting ability. we laughed, we cried, we marveled at this piece of novice thespianism and randomness. and then, my colleague ended up seeing the film from which the clip came late one night in london.

in his own words: “it was one of the weirdest experiences of my life!!!” it turns out this film has quite a cult following and they are pretty devoted to watching it in late night cinemas and playing along with the script.

when there was a sex scene EVERYONE walked out saying “let’s get out. it’s the sex scene. we can’t see that!! sex scene! OUT!!” or in a scene where a spoon features on the wall of an apartment, the entire audience, minus my friend, started throwing plastic spoons at the screen, shouting “SPOOONS SPOONS SPOOOOONS!!!!”

yeah. that would weird me out too. check it out on youtube. please. it just might bring a little bit of amusement to your world and also a touch more appreciation for when cinema actually gets it right.
